Old Faithful
AUDIT 01

Frame Geometry · UCI · 1993–1996

Old Faithful

Graeme Obree · The Hour Record

Impossible Detail: The UCI regulated the bicycle’s parts but never the rider’s posture or bottom-bracket width. A self-built frame — no top tube, a 40 mm bottom bracket running on washing-machine bearings — broke a nine-year-old record while violating no printed rule. The tuck was banned roughly an hour before the 1994 World Championships, under a rule that was never written down.

The Trionda IMU Hardware

Offside, resolved 500 times a second

Impossible Detail: Offside adjudication relied on roughly 50 fps optical vision — a human-scale margin. A 500 Hz inertial measurement unit inside the ball resolves the contact moment five hundred times a second, retiring visual judgment for raw-data compliance.

SPECIAL AUDIT

Ball Aerodynamics · FIFA · 2010

The Jabulani Sphere

FIFA Law 2 · 2010

Impossible Detail: FIFA Law 2 governs the ball’s mass and circumference — not its aerodynamics. The 8-panel smooth Jabulani was fully legal, and aerodynamically unstable at professional strike speed.
