The UCI regulated the bicycle’s parts but never the rider’s posture or bottom-bracket width. A self-built frame — no top tube, a 40 mm bottom bracket running on washing-machine bearings — broke a nine-year-old record while violating no printed rule. The tuck was banned roughly an hour before the 1994 World Championships, under a rule that was never written down.
